In your opinion, what is the value of writing in today's electronic society? Answer: Studying Abroad Education is one of the most important segments of every individuals life. Receiving proper education helps to succeed in life both financially and socially, in fact in the modern era it is a necessity just like food and water, without which leading a good, luxurious and a happy life will not be possible. Education is a process to gain knowledge and the more knowledge we receive, the more you grow and progress in life. In fact, in most of the countries in the world, education is a part of the fundamental rights stated in the countrys respective constitutions. The reason for making education a part of the fundamental rights is that an educated society is more prone to economic growth and brings changes in the social environment of a country, which will lead to social upliftment. However, the education of different countries is different in many ways (Stone Petrick, 2013). And, after receiving a basic primary education in ones homeland, it is an excellent opportunity to study abroad w hich I was lucky enough to achieve. I headed to the United States of America, for my master degree in Information Assurance at the Wilmington University in August 2015. Though my course was for a short span of time, I got enough time to understand the culture and the environment of a student life abroad. To begin with, living and studying abroad is any adventurous in itself, which teaches you many things in life beyond the course one is studying. A sense of responsibility along with independence and freedom is what studying abroad brings in every student. With the passing of each day, new lessons are learnt which helps the student be more open to diverse ideas, diverse cultures (Llanes Muoz, 2013). Living in a foreign country can teach you how differently a routine thing can be done in a different cultural environment. A student who has received education in a foreign country will have a better understanding of different cultures and ideas and will be more comfortable working with people of different cultures and back grounds compared to a student who has just learnt about different cultures from books and internet. Another benefit here is when students studies abroad, they express their cultural ideas to the locals in another country, which makes the student reflective about both his homeland culture along with learning a new culture. A student who has experienced life abroad will have a better and a broader perspective on life. Learning different customs both the local and regarding education of another country leads to different experiences, exposures and personal development in the student. Involvement and interactions with people of different race, colour and creed, help the student to be a better team-player and a more efficient problem-solver (Stroud, 2010). Another significant benefit of studying abroad is an opportunity to learn the local language of the concerned country in which the student studies. The best way to learn the language is to observe the locals and communicate in the local language with them. In my case, the Wilmington University offered a separate language program to students who were from different countries. I joined the same program, and as I improved my hold in the local language, I got my first job in America (Kinginger, 2011). The student visa in America allows part-time jobs while you are studying; therefore, I was selected for an ON-Campus placement as an assistance to a profession who was writing a book. My job was to research the material he needed to complete his book. As the book was related to the course I was pursuing, my academics helped me with the job and in benefited both financially as well as academically through this job. Although working while studying can be quite hectic, it teaches a student the importance of time management when a student balanced between studying and working. However, my academic goal was to excel in my master degree, and my first job just helped my get closer to that goal as while researching for the professor who I assisted, my knowledge increased immensely along with the guidance of the professor which made me a better student with increased grades (Cottrell, 2011). However, my personal experience in studying abroad tells that different educational systems have different ways of training the students. It is for the student to overcome the diversity which studying abroad brings with it and to adapt and observe the different culture, language and ideas of the new country to help the student grow in every aspect of life, learn new languages and have a broad outlook of the world (Pedersen, 2015). The story takes place on a small island in the Florida Keys. Davey Tsering and his family are on vacation at a resort. Davey is tired and bored of staying in the hotel room, so he decides to sneak out and find a quiet place to read. He finds a quiet spot on a tiny beach on the sound end of the island. Davey decides to go for a swim despite the posted "NO SWIMMING" sign. It doesn't take long for things to get dangerous when a rip current that is pulling him out further away from shore, and something even more dangerous swimming beneath him, Davey must struggle to survive. One morning while Davey's family is still sleeping, he decides to sneak out of the hotel and go for a walk and read a book. While walking, he decides on taking a swim. Despite the "NO SWIMMING" signs that are posted. After a short-time, Davey finds himself along in the ocean, surrounded by sharks. After being attacked by a tiger shark, Davey is alone and scared, he must find a way to stay alive and hope that help comes soon. Back on the Island Davey's family wakes up and realize that Davey is gone. It is not long before they are running around frantic searching the island for him. They talk to a staff member who would like to keep this incident from getting back to the local authorities. This does not stop Davey's parents. After speaking to the local deputy, the family is introduced to a British girl named Drew Bobkin . She was the last person to see Davey on the beach that morning. Although Drew and Brando are young, they are very observant and assist in Davey's rescue. Because of the bravery and persistence of the group, Davey is rescued. The ending of the book leads to Davey learning to appreciate his family, and not take them for granted. He realizes that family time is everything and that his family really loves him. There is a learning lesson for Drew, and Brando as well. They learn that even young people can make a difference. If it had not been for them, they would have never found Davey. I really enjoyed this book. Sharks are one of my favorite animals to learn about. They can be very interesting, and at the same time, they can be very dangerous. I think that Davey should not have disobeyed and run off on his own. It took a life and death situation for him to realize how important he was to his family. I think he will think twice before putting himself in any dangerous situation again.

Back in his homeland way before the Trojan War, Odysseus was a king. He had a wife and a son whom he had left an infant during the time when he had to leave for Troy. In disguise as a stranger, Odysseus had managed to convince Alcinous to bring him back to his homeland. He had to put away his pride so as to get the much needed help in reachi ng home. â€Å"And there Odysseus stood, gazing at all this bounty, a man who’d borne so much†¦Once he’d had his fill of marveling it all.† (141). Athena had also disguised him as a beggar so as to get revenge against the suitors. With this, Odysseus had to again cast away his pride (Homer and Johnston 148). Athena explains to him: â€Å"First I will transform you-no one must know you. I will shrivel the supple skin on your lithe limbs, strip the russet curls from your head and deck you out in rags you’d hate to see some other mortal wear; I’ll dim the fire in your eyes, so shinning once†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (253) Once again, Odysseus displays much loss of pride when he comes across a goat herder who mocks and kicks him but was capable of rationalizing the situation. CES Selector Materials for Oars: The solution The performance index for a light, stiff beam (M1) is plotted in stage 1. Density is plotted on the x-axis and Youngs Modulus on the y-axis. A selection line of gradient 2, through the point (1.0, 49) is plotted. The constraints on adequate fracture toughness and price are plotted in stage 2. Fracture Toughness is plotted on the x axis and Density on the y axis. A selection box whose upper left corner is at (1.0, 100) is defined. In stage 1, the line representing the performance index is moved up until only a small subset of records remains in the selection. Magnified views of the two selection charts are shown in figures M5.3.1 and M5.3.2 (results intersection and hide failed records on), and the materials passing both stages are shown in figure M5.3.3. Oars for competitive rowing are made from Spruce, or (better) Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). Low Tech oars have been made for centuries out of bamboo. Boron Carbide might be acceptable, but it would be too brittle, despite its moderate fracture toughness. Selection Stages The selection methodology behind CES Selector is described in section 1 of the online book CES In Depth Background on Selection Systems. The application of this selection methodology to a specific area (e.g. the selection of the optimum material for an engineering component) is dealt with in the section of CES In Depth for the relevant data module. Before any selection can be performed, the user must specify which of the data tables will be the Selection Table (e.g. Materials, Process etc). This is done in the Project Settings dialog box (or on the Welcome screen when CES is first opened). Only one table can be used for selection in a given project. The filter and form for each data table must also be specified. The recommended filter and form combination for each type of selection is listed below. Selecting records with Selector involves performing a series of independent selection stages. On each stage, the user selects a subset of records. Every record in the current filter for the Selection Table is considered during each stage, and the program automatically keeps track of all the results. One way to perform a selection is to use a Selection Chart. The two axes of a selection chart specify record attributes. The user selects the area of the chart that fulfils the selection criteria. One selection chart is used for each selection stage. A second way to perform a selection is to use a Limit stage, in which numerical limits for one or more attributes are entered in a table. Limit stages can be combined with graphical stages (using selection charts). A single functional requirement (e.g. the strength/density ratio of a material) can be represented by one stage in Selector. In many design situations it is necessary to identify records that satisfy several functional requirements simultaneously, for example high strength/density, high stiffness and low cost/kg for a material. In these cases Selector can perform several selection stages and the program will store the results of each stage automatically. The selection stages can be modified at any time if necessary. At the end of the selection (or at any other time), the user can find out which records passed all, or some of the selection stages. It is important to realise that in this strategy, all records contained in the selection table with applicable data entries are considered in every selection stage (and are plotted on the charts). Therefore each stage is independent of the others. This means that records are never discarded from the selection process, even though they may fail a particular selection stage. So it is possible to find out how every entity performed on each of the stages. The ones that pass all stages will probably be the best choices. Selector can also generate plots of user-defined attributes, which are mathematical combinations of the attributes in the database. Examples are the specific strength el / (el is the elastic limit and is the density), and the performance index for a light stiff beam E / (E is the Youngs Modulus). This facility greatly expands the versatility of the selection process and enables two complex performance requirements to be compared on one selection chart. CALCULATION OF THE GRADIENT FOR BOTH GRAPHS The gradient of the lines in both graphs were calculated using the performance index for the bending of rods, the formula used was: E/P = Youngs Modulus / Density In order to get the above equation into the correct term for a gradient or a curve (y=m x + c) both sides of the equation had to be logged: LOG E LOG ? = LOG C Transpose for LOG E LOG E = LOG ? + LOG C The equation for a straight line is y = mx + c From the above it is fair to mention that: Y = LOG E X = LOG ? Density is 1.5 Method The Cambridge engineering selector was the program that was used in order to get the desired materials. The main two properties that the chosen material requires are strength and toughness. In order to get the right material two graphs had to be plotted. The first graph was Youngs Modulus vs. Density and the second graph was Fracture toughness vs. Density. The first thing that had to be done was to select the right units, which are SI units. This was done by going onto Tools, selecting options and then the correct units and currency which was GB Pounds. Select New Project from the File menu Choose the New Graphical Stage command from the Project menu. The Graph Stage Wizard will appear, ready to define the x and y axis of your chart. The procedure for selecting attributes for plotting on the selection chart axes is the same for both axes (and whichever selection table). The steps are as follows: The X-Axis page is presented first. To specify a single attribute, click once on the down arrow to display the drop down list box. Select one attribute, Density. (The Advanced function could be used to create a combination of attributes for one axis.) The title can be changed by the user by typing in the Title field if desired. Let the settings for the axis Scale remain as the default, Logarithmic and Autoscale. You can change the scales to linear and back again, by clicking one of the radio buttons marked Logarithmic and Linear. To switch to the Y-Axis page click once on the other tab. Select the attribute Youngs Modulus from the drop down list box and let the scale be Logarithmic and Autoscale. Click once on OK to exit the dialog. The graph will then be created. Follow the same steps to create the other graph except this time, the y-axis is going to be Fracture toughness. Once both graphs are created, the gradient, which was worked out earlier, has to be put in. In the graph showing Youngs Modulus vs. Density the gradient is 2 and for the graph showing Fracture toughness vs. Density it is 1.5. To put in a gradient line, simply click on the icon on the toolbar which has a picture of a gradient on it. Then a box will appear asking you to enter a value for the gradient. Once the value of the gradient is entered, the gradient will appear on the graph. The line can be moved up and down the graph depending on what kinds of materials are needed. In order to narrow down the number of materials to a few, the line has to be moved carefully upwards until only a few materials are shown in the box. This has to be done for both graphs until only 4 or 5 materials appear in the box showing both stages. But in the economical end of manufacturing rowing boat oars, both the wood materials would be selected, as they are reasonably cheap to buy, whereas carbon fibre is more expensive. Costs of materials are not the only concern, as the usage of each material is just as important. Questions could be asked; such as, how often is the boat going to be used? Is it going to be used on a regular basis? All of these questions should be taken into consideration before a decision is made. If an average person who is not a professional rower was going to consume a rowing boat ore, he/she would be better off opting for the one made from low density wood as the wooden ore is a great deal cheaper. On the other hand if the same question was asked to a professional rower, then the rower would pick the ore made of carbon fibre since the price does not come at the top of the list of concern and winning the race is the major objective. Basically, there is a good point and a bad point on each material. This largely depends on the object of buying the ore. If it is to win a race then money is not an option and the consumer would be better off buying the one made from carbon fibre but if the object is to just go rowing for a weekend then the best option would be to go for the oar made from wood simply because there is no likely consistent further use for the ore.

The Slavery of the Millennium Essay -- Ethical Issues, Sex Traffickin

It is common ideology that slavery is a thing of the past. This is far from true; sex trafficking is prominent all across the world on a massive scale and is the new form of slavery. According to the U.S. Department of State estimates that 560,000 women are trafficked each year across international borders and forced into the sex industry. {{34 Holman,M. 2008; }} Other non-government programs such a UNICEF have these numbers in the millions. {{34 Holman,M. 2008; }} The real numbers of sex trafficking are unknown, but the problem is evident. The general public is unaware of the sex trafficking epidemic because the forced labor business is not only inhumane: it is well hidden. The business is kept underground due to the stigma associated with prostitution. Because of this most of workers of the business are from â€Å"forced recruitment†. {{25 Samarasinghe,Vidyamali 2007; }} Sex trafficking is not only an issue over seas, it is also a problem in the United States a culture tha t â€Å"glamorizes pimping and prostitution."{{31 Kotrla,K. 2010; }} This culture of tolerance, fueled by the glamorization of pimping, is embodied in multiple venues of daily life, including clothing, songs, television, video games, and other forms of entertainment. Traffickers easily control victim of their trade by using techniques such as â€Å"force, fraud, or coercion, including techniques such as confinement, beatings, rape, confiscation of documents, debt bondage, false owners of employment, and threats of harm to the victim or the victim's family.†{{30 Potocky,M. 2010; }}Once in the business, it is almost impossible for a victim to escape, and if they do they are not likely to come forward to authorities. There are four main ways out of sex trafficking enslavemen... ...ggling are often confused as activities, and the police and immigration officials are ill-equipped to recognize and respond to the problem as one involving victims as well as offenders.† (28) [add to this] If these simple changes are implemented to the standing sex trafficking legislation, mainly the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act implemented in 2000 failing in its attempt to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute traffickers. The TVPA will be up for reauthorization in November 2011. As this quickly approaching, it is imperative the public is educated on the human exploitation that is often ignored. Sex trafficking is a global problem that can only be taken down by the help of a government that recognizes the weakness in its current policy. The victims and the public deserve better than the U.S. government has done thus far.

At universities and colleges Essay

In today’s society, a large number of the students in universities and colleges have less physical exercise than ever before and hardly go out of the campus to have some social activities. Many people argue that students pay more attention to the study than their health which may because they[SQQ1] do not get enough financial support. As to this problem, I hold the opinion that sports and social activities are just the same significant as classes and libraries and receiving equal financial support can have many benefits though it still has some shortages[SQQ2]. In what follows, I will illustrate my point of view. First of all, today’s students need to face more challenges which means they specially should have a better body[SQQ3] to fight for their future. Enough sports and social activities can help them become healthy not only physically but also mentally. As we can see, some of the students in universities choose to end their own lives because of their pressure on scores or other things and we can easily find most of these students hardly do exercise and even never go out to do social activities such as volunteer work. If this part of the students can regard sports and social activities quite important, they may have a healthier psychology and may not end their own life[SQQ4]. Secondly, if the universities can give sports and activities equal financial support as classes and libraries and build up enough gyms and exercise areas, it can be more convenient for students to keep fit. Because of the schools’ support, the students do not need to go out of the school to do social activities and they can find more chances in school campus like joining the school’s Red Cross to visit the local welfare center for children. Also, the increasing sports place can even bring students the convenience to do any sports any time they like. However, it can still have several disadvantages. For example, the schools  may have less money than before to support students’ study which means the school may invite less famous professors from all over the world to make speech for students.
